The Door Painting Process

Let’s walk through the technological process of painting a car door in our spray booth, carried out by our specialists. We started with a customer who had decided to replace an old door because of corrosion that made it impossible to restore fully. After a new door was bought from our partners, we took on the task of matching the colour formula so that the new door would blend perfectly with the rest of the car. Colour matching is done at our own service centre, which helps keep the cost of this service down.
Surface preparation is the first and one of the most important stages in painting a car door. It involves thoroughly removing dirt, dust and all other foreign particles.
Cleaner removal: the next step is to remove the residue of the cleaner with special cleaning wipes.
Surface sanding: the door surface is then sanded with a scuff pad or abrasive discs until the metal reaches the required condition.
Removing sanding residue: the sanding dust is thoroughly removed with compressed air and a blow gun.
Reapplying the cleaner: the cleaner is applied to the door surface once again.
Another cleaner removal stage: after this step the cleaner is removed from the door surface again with special wipes.
Removing dust and residue: a tack cloth is used to remove dust and particle residue completely.
Primer: applied to the surface that was previously sanded down to bare metal. The primer is applied in one coat.
Primer flash-off: after the primer is applied it needs 5-10 minutes to flash off before the filler goes on.
Filler (primer surfacer): applied to the surface after the primer.
Flash-off before the base coat: after the filler is applied it needs 15-20 minutes before the base coat goes on.
Base coat: applied in 2-3 coats.
Flash-off between base coats: 5-10 minutes between each coat of base, and 10-15 minutes before the clear coat is applied.
Clear coat: applied in 1.5-2 coats.
Flash-off before baking: wait 5-10 minutes before starting the drying cycle.
Drying: the painted part is baked in the spray booth at 60 degrees (the temperature of the painted surface), which ensures even, durable curing of the painted surface. The drying process takes 25-35 minutes.
All the operations described are an integral part of a professional, high-quality painting process. When every stage is followed, your car will keep a quality paint finish for a long time, provided it is properly cared for and free of mechanical damage.
