Aluminium Body Repair

Body repair·1 min read

What makes aluminium body repair special is the unique physical properties of the metal. To properly correct a deformation, every displaced point has to be returned to the original position set by the car manufacturer.

The main difficulty in repairing an aluminium body is that the material hardly stretches at all. Because aluminium is very soft and cannot pull the surrounding area along with it, a dent in the body has to be worked not from the edges inward, as is usually done, but the other way round: starting from the centre of the dent and moving gradually towards the edges.

Repairing an aluminium body is a complex operation because of the nature of the material itself; it requires special working methods and professional skill with the tools.

Not every body shop, and not even every official dealership, can repair aluminium body parts with argon-arc (TIG) welding. This is usually down to a lack of the necessary equipment and experience. Without this capability, even slightly damaged parts often get replaced unnecessarily, which can push up costs considerably. Given the price of aluminium components, the sensible approach is a quality repair using TIG welding technology, which makes it possible to restore the damage with specialised equipment.

The cost of aluminium body repair is determined after inspecting the car.
